Cobb Swamp Upgrade Project
Michigan Electric Transmission Company, LLC (METC), a subsidieary of ITC Holdings Corp., is rebuilding five high-voltage transmission lines that originate at the Cobb Generating Plant and pass through the Cobb swamp corridor. ITC is replacing the 1950's vintage single-circuit, wood H-frame structures that have deteriorated over time. The five lines will be consolidated onto three sets of double-circuit steel monopoles.
Beforethe line work can start, ITC has to rebuild the old access road through 4.5 miles of swamp of swamp and install three temporary bridges. The road and bridge work is underway now; line work will begin when the road work is completed. Because only one of the lines can be taken out of service at a time, each circuit has to be rebuilt individually, end-to-end. The entire project will be completed by the end of 2010.
ITC is leasing a space off Holton Road east of U.S. 31 for use as a staging area for poles and other equipment needed for the project.
The Cobb Swamp project is one of many capital improvements ITC is making to Michigan's high voltage transmission grid. Through subsidiaries ITC Transmission and Michigan Electric Transmission Company, LLC (METC), ITC Holdings Corp. owns and operates more than 8,100 miles of high voltage electric lines, transmission stations and substations serving approximately 9.8 million people throughout Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
